Analysis of In The Year 2889


When we read a short story or a novel or anything, certainly has elements of literature describing the structure of the story, like a Plot. Do you know what is the Plot? And what kind of concept contained in this story? I have some short story “In The Year 2889” who at the beginning of the story characters to say that the people living in the twenty-ninth century in which they live like in a fairy tale in which to feel alive with the magic that feel the magic it looks natural. So, This Short Story has combination of plot with Flashback and Foreshadowing or also can be called regressive during in the story.
         What is Plot ? Plot is series of episodes in a narrative carried out by the characters. And there are six elements in a plot : Exposition/Initial Incident, Rising Action, Conflict, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution. And there has types of plot who combination of plot such as Regressive or Flashback and Foreshadowing.
         Flashback in the literature is an event where the author/narrator recalls the events before the story begins. There are two types of flashback, the first is Analepsis Externally, telling events that happened before the story begins and Internal Analepsis are events that have occurred but the author /narrator is being reminds us back to the past story. One example part of Flashback “When through muddy streets rumbling boxes on wheels, drawn by horses—yes, by horses!—were the only means of conveyance.“ the reason why I took this example because as in the example of the words, in the past, people still use horses for transportation that are used daily, in contrast to currently used horses just for hobbies and entertainment. Now, people are already using the convenient transportation.
Foreshadowing in literature is a future event when the author/narrator instructs the readers/audiences to imagine what will happen in the future. The shadow can be described through narration, dialogue or setting, the shadows can be subtle or overt. One example parts of Foreshadowing “Some of these absorb and condense the living force contained in the sun's rays; others, the electricity stored in our globe; others again, the energy coming from whatever source, as a waterfall, a stream, the winds, etc.“ Here, the characters try to provide shade to people in the past, what if in the future they will no longer difficult to get light or otherwise, because in the future technologies will be more advanced.
When I read In The Year 2889, in this story the characters tells about imagination, how the world in 1000 years later will come. How technology will evolve from 1889 until 2889. So, The revolution that happened in this story illustrates how to become a modern city that will occur in the future, such as the human population, changes in road widening, the houses will be higher, which in the transport of past use of the horse, but the future may already be using tube running quickly.
new discoveries happen at that time. time past, spread the word using the newspaper but when technology began to evolve news was disseminated by telephone that it would be easier to give news to others.
someone named George Washington Smith who has a newspaper company that is well known from generation to generation. Unfortunately, the company can not survive long due to the rival journal with a more modern. then Mr. Fritz Napoleon Smith bought it and make the company grow and become more successful.
It is an interesting story because Verne once wrote a story that will occur in the future where it did not happen at that time, many parts of which describes a very ancient technology was defeated by new technology. in this story predicting that it will happen 100 or 1000 years to come, but without a long wait, the technology is already happening in the present, such as a communication tool which is owned by Mr and Mrs Smith. if the aim of describing the technology used by Mr and Mrs Smith is a kind of video calls. We can see how the times change occurred in the past to the present.
There are type of plot contained in short story “In The Year 2889”. Based on events sequences is Flashback and Foreshadowing (Regressive) where the beginning of this story tells about life in the past where there are many advanced tools that exist on now or in the future, and this short story tells us that how the future will happen with remarkable success in the future.
